Girl, I hate a book club BUT ima join 😂 Also, not kicking off 2025 with Flyy Girl! That book had me in a choke hold (and I was absolutely too young to be reading it - I was a week away from 15 when it was republished by Simon & Schuster in 1996.)
Hi Lashawn! I’m hoping you can help me find a book whose title I cannot remember for the life of me. This book was released in the late 1990s or early 2000s, written by a black woman, which is how I came across this substack. It’s about a young black woman who works as a domestic for a rich white family, and one drunken night, the white patriarch rapes the domestic worker. She becomes pregnant, flees back to her small hometown, and births a baby girl with the same jade green eyes as her father, but the mother will not tell the daughter who her father is. If I remember correctly, the biracial daughter decides to live as a white woman and marries a white man, but ended up birthing a very brown daughter with those same green eyes. The white passing mother gives the baby to her mother, the baby’s grandmother, to raise in the small town. The granddaughter wants to pursue a singing career in the big city and discovers her ancestry during her quest. I know this was a lot of detail but I am praying sooo hard you will remember the title so I can sleep at night and buy this book for my collection. Any assistance you can offer would be much appreciated!!
